About the Songwriter

Gavin Pang grew up listening to music, thanks to his parents. Rock music appealed most to him. Because of this interest, he learned to play the acoustic guitar with his father’s blessing. During his early teens, his eldest brother shared about Jesus with him. At the age of 17 in 1998, he made a decision to believe in Jesus.

Encouraged by his brother, Gavin started to play guitar for worship in 2003 and eventually led worship. He is currently attending Sungai Way-Subang Methodist Church (SSMC) where he is serving in the worship music ministry. He believes God blessed him with musical abilities to bring glory to Him and to draw people to Him. You’ll Carry Me is one of the first songs he wrote and recorded as a single. He aspires to write more songs for the vision that God has given him. His other God-given ability would be IT skills, which he is using to provide technical support where he is currently working.

The Story Behind This Song (as told by Gavin Pang)

"You'll Carry Me" was one of the first songs that God inspired me to write. I had a desire for the song to be professionally recorded but had little knowledge and experience to do so. Song Maker was a God-sent program for me to learn about producing a song – from writing a song to the recording of the song.

I felt privileged to be mentored personally by and work with a pool of established, experienced, and talented people who not only serve in the worship music ministry but are also professionals in the music industry. I felt that my relationship with the mentors was not just as mentor-mentee, but a partnership as well. Through this meaningful relationship, the song quality was very much improved – lyrically and musically.

The process was not an entirely smooth-sailing one – things did not always go my way but through my mentors’ patience, gentle guidance, and sharing of their own personal journey, I have learned to look at the big picture and let go of some things so that the song will achieve God’s purpose. After all, in a way the song is not entirely mine but belongs to God. It was a humbling experience.

I am grateful that my mentors believed in the potential of the song and have been very supportive and encouraging. I am grateful that God provided these mentors to not only coach but to use their talents to arrange and produce the song, as well as bring together instrumentalists to record the song. I’m amazed that despite the challenges caused by the Covid-19 lockdown, we were able to record the song remotely from different locations – from East Malaysia to halfway around the world in the United States. I appreciate the hard work that this team has put in to get the song published. It was an honour to learn from and work with these people. May all this result in glory and praise to God.
