About the Songwriter

Devorah's journey as a follower of Jesus Christ started after Form 5. She had listened to many Bible stories before when she was attending Sunday school at a neighbourhood church and had said many sinner’s prayers through those evangelistic booklets that she had received. However, she only became a Christian when she was at Full Gospel Tabernacle, Taman Bukit Indah, along Old Klang Road when she made a conscious decision to follow Jesus Christ.

She learned to serve God and to have fellowship with believers when she started to attend INTI Christian Fellowship at the Subang Jaya campus. Before she went to the States to pursue her studies, she followed her college seniors to attend Full Gospel Assembly (FGA) at Jalan Kuchai Lama. When she came back from the States, she went back to FGA. Later, she went to a prophetic church to learn the works of prophetic ministries. When it was time for her to move on, she went back to FGA. Due to the constant changes in her work schedule, she has also started to attend other church services and fellowship meetings organized by Calvary, SIB, Glad Tidings, and Reformed Evangelical Church of Klang Valley, in order to ensure the learning of the Word of God and being in fellowship with the believers continue.

Devorah has always made herself available to be part of a choir, dance group, drama club, performing arts, or worship team where possible. Currently, she is focusing on producing her own songs and developing other talents so that people will be blessed and inspired to do the same in their own ways. By doing this, she believes the kingdom of God within us will expand and God will be glorified through us.

The Story Behind This Song (as told by Devorah Chan)

‘You Are My Sun And My Shield’ was written when I was working under a Biblically-speaking, Egyptian kingdom type of workplace. It was a place of never-ending tiring workloads. I felt that I was being enslaved, oppressed, and in the wilderness like the Israelites in the book of Exodus. It had affected my health so badly that I had to resign with so many uncertainties about my future. Had I chosen to continue and stay on to work in the company, I would merely be just serving a type of mammon. I would not have time to develop the gifts and talents that God has given to me. The production of this song would probably never have happened since I didn’t even have time for God or for people back then. Taking on the task to produce this song and working with professionals would not have been possible.

This song has been sung in corporate worship services and a funeral service. The purpose of writing this song is to encourage me and any listener or worshiper that when we are in the midst of constant burdensome pharaonic hardships, we need to remember who our Lord is and what He can do. This is a desert cry song; a melancholic song to remind us that we must continue to trust God and put our faith in Him. Even during times of weakness, illness, lack, or any kind of deficit in our lives, we can still sing, “Hallelujah, Praise the Lord” for who He is.
